By now, most people are aware that sunscreen is the ultimate anti-aging tool and skincare professionals insist that we wear it every day. I will admit that I haven’t completely followed this rule for the sole fact that I have not been able to find a sunscreen that I forget I have on. I’ve tried tons of versions advertised to be “dry touch,” “weightless” and “non greasy,” and they all have failed me. Even if a sunscreen goes on weightless, I can still usually feel a filmy texture on my skin. I also notice that most brands breakdown my makeup, or make me look greasy by mid-day.
If you’re not familiar with Tatcha, their skincare formulas are based on the beauty secrets of Japanese Geishas. It’s a beautiful line and I have yet to try a product from them that I don’t like. Tatcha’s Pore Perfecting Sunscreen has taken four years and over one hundred formula submissions to create. They wanted to create a product that was not only effective, but elegant and I really believe they did just that. This is the best sunscreen I have ever tried. A revelation is a little bittersweet as it’s also the most expensive.
Tatcha’s Pore Perfecting Suncreen has a thick and creamy texture that melts into your skin and absorbs immediately. It feels differently than any other sunscreen I’ve tried, it’s silky. It goes on almost like a moisturizer and it does not feel greasy whatsoever. I have combination skin and tend to get oily in my t-zone as the day goes on. This sunscreen doesn’t make me greasy at all; in fact I feel it’s done the opposite, as I’ve noticed I’m less oily when I wear it. I don’t think the brand claims that the Pore Perfecting Sunscreen mattifies, but they use Japanese Wild Rose in the ingredients, which is clinically proven to reduce sebum (oil) and also boost collagen. My favorite thing about this sunscreen is that it does not break down your makeup, even after 8+ hours.
Most sunscreens are made with water particles suspended in oil which is what makes them feel greasy and gross. In the Pore Perfecting Sunscreen, Tatcha suspends botanical oils in water instead which is why I think it feels so much different. The sunscreen is said to tighten pores, which I don’t notice when using, however it does make my skin feel soft and smooth. The Pore Perfecting Sunscreen is advertised to double as a primer which I can understand as it does feel a little primer-y. I don’t use primer but for those who do, I’m not sure this would be able to completely replace your primer unless you use a lot of it. The sunscreen has a clean scent which I really enjoy but it might be somewhat strong for those with fragrance sensitivities.
On their website, Tachta says “we wanted something that wouldn’t be a chore to apply, something that would be a cherished part of a daily skincare ritual.” Since I have been using the Pore Perfecting Sunscreen, I no longer dread putting on suncreen as part of my morning skincare routine. Tatcha knocked it out of the park with this product.
At $68, it is pretty pricey. Tatcha does sell a travel version on their website for only $13, so you can try it before taking the plunge.
Will it be Going in my Kit?
YES. I currently use La Roche Posay in my kit but I will be replacing it with this.
Cruelty Free?
Yes. From their website: “We do not test on animals in any country, nor do our vendors, chemists, manufacturers or formulators.”
Natural and/or Environmentally Friendly?
This product is not plant based but it does not contain mineral oil, synthetic colors, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, PEGs, PPGs, Urea, DEA, TEA or phthalates.
While not technically “environmental,” I love supporting brands that give back. Tatcha is partnered with the Room to Read Foundation and for every full sized product purchase, Tatcha donates one day of schooling to girls in developing countries. Since January 2014, Tatcha has funded 385,000 days of school, mentorship and life skills. You can read more about their partnership HERE
