Bioderma Sensibio H20 is a standard in most working makeup artist’s kits, and for good reason. It’s the best makeup remover I’ve ever used.
Until recently you weren’t able to purchase Bioderma in the United States, so when I went to Paris in 2009 I was super excited to finally test out the cult item I had heard about for so long. Since then I have not been without it, even if I have to beg family and friends to grab bottles for me when they’re traveling abroad.
Bioderma Sensibio is a cleansing/makeup removing micellar water for sensitive skin. With certain makeup removers, I feel like I have to rub pretty aggressively in order for it to work. The Bioderma gets everything off with very little effort. It’s so gentle, and there’s not even a hint of oily residue when you’re done. It actually feels like you are cleansing your face with water. There is no scent, no stinging and no stripping.
The Sensibio version (with the pink top) is my favorite because it’s made for sensitive skin. When I’m on set and have multiple looks to get through during the day, the Bioderma Sensibo is a lifesaver for me, as well as my model. It never causes redness or irritation, no matter how many times we need to remove the makeup and start over. Before I start makeup, the Bioderma Sensibio is always my first step in skin prep. A quick pass over my model or actor’s skin gives a really great, quick cleanse, and I know that I’m starting with a totally clean canvas.
For non makeup artists, I wouldn’t recommend replacing your regular face washing routine with this product. It’s perfect for nights when you’re coming in late and are too lazy to do a full cleanse before bed, it’s also way better than wipes. Personally, I love using it to remove my eye makeup before I wash my face. I wear a lot of eye makeup, and tons of mascara and it gets it off in 1-2 wipes. Bioderma also sells a version for oily skin called Sebium H20. I’ve never tried it so I can’t attest to the differences, but if you’re interested, look for the green cap.
Micellar waters have been rapidly gaining popularity over the last year, but I have yet to try any that compare to Bioderma. It’s a lot easier to find in the United States these days, but unfortunately it’s much more expensive than if you were to buy it in Paris. The last time I was there (see my French Pharmacy Haul here), I stocked up because it’s about half the price.
